For the past two years, the artificial intelligence conversation has been dominated by ever-larger models and the companies that build them. But a quieter, arguably more consequential shift is now underway inside corporate IT departments, where the real question is no longer which model is smartest, but whether AI agents can actually work together.

As businesses move from experimenting with chatbots to deploying autonomous agents that take real actions, a familiar problem has resurfaced: fragmentation. Agents built on different platforms need a common language to share context and coordinate tasks, or the whole promise of an automated workflow quickly falls apart.

From rival protocols to shared plumbing

Two open protocols have emerged as the leading candidates to become that common language. Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, known as MCP, gives agents a standard way to connect to tools and data, while Google's Agent-to-Agent protocol, or A2A, focuses on letting independent agents communicate directly with one another.

Rather than fight a winner-take-all standards war, the industry has moved to place both under neutral governance. This month, Google's A2A protocol formally joined a Linux Foundation-directed agentic AI initiative, taking its place alongside Anthropic's MCP under an independent umbrella rather than any single company's control.

The membership behind that effort reads like a roll call of the entire sector. The foundation now counts more than 250 members, including cloud and AI heavyweights such as AWS, Anthropic, Microsoft and OpenAI, a rare show of cooperation among fierce commercial rivals who all stand to benefit from interoperability.

Enterprise adoption picks up

The standards push is being driven by real demand rather than abstract idealism. Large enterprises are moving quickly, with partnerships such as the collaboration between IBM and OpenAI aimed at deploying frontier AI across day-to-day business operations rather than confining it to isolated pilot projects.

Vendors are also racing to make agents safer for corporate environments. Anthropic's managed agents now let administrators restrict which websites an agent's search and fetch tools can reach, using allowed-domain and blocked-domain settings, a small but telling sign of how seriously enterprise governance is being taken.

These controls matter because autonomy without guardrails is a liability. A company will not hand real authority to an AI agent unless it can bound what that agent is allowed to see and do, which is precisely why access controls and shared standards are advancing hand in hand.

Why standardization is the real story

History offers a clear precedent for why this matters. The internet became transformative not because of any single company, but because shared protocols let independent systems interoperate freely, and the agentic AI world now appears to be reaching for the same foundational bargain.

If the effort holds, the next phase of the AI boom may be defined less by headline-grabbing model launches and more by the invisible plumbing that lets thousands of agents cooperate across companies. In that scenario, the winners will be those who embraced open standards early, not those who tried to wall off their own gardens.
