America's AI Buildout Goes Nuclear: OpenAI's 8 Gigawatt Ohio Data Center Anchors a Trillion Dollar Race

OpenAI is leasing a colossal AI data center on a former uranium enrichment site in Ohio, backed by a 105 billion dollar Nvidia financing guarantee. It is the centerpiece of an infrastructure arms race in which Microsoft, Nvidia and others are committing staggering sums to power the AI era.

The United States is in the grip of an artificial intelligence infrastructure boom of historic proportions. Across the country, technology giants are pouring astonishing sums of money into the data centers, chips and power plants needed to fuel the next generation of AI models. The scale of these commitments has reached a point that would have seemed almost unimaginable just a couple of years ago, redrawing the industrial map.

OpenAI's giant Ohio data center

At the heart of this movement stands a remarkable new project from OpenAI. The company behind ChatGPT is set to lease a colossal AI data center for a period of 20 years, built on the grounds of a former Cold War era uranium enrichment facility in Ohio. The symbolism is striking, as a site once dedicated to nuclear technology is repurposed to power the computing engines of the modern age.

The sheer capacity of the facility is what sets it apart. In its initial phase, the data center will offer 4.25 gigawatts of computing power, with the potential to expand all the way up to 8 gigawatts over time. This would make it one of the single largest data centers ever dedicated to artificial intelligence, and it will run exclusively on chips supplied by the industry leader Nvidia.

The financial architecture behind the project is equally extraordinary. Nvidia is providing a financing guarantee worth an eye watering 105 billion dollars, underpinning the entire venture. Alongside this, SoftBank and its energy arm SB Energy are investing more than 4 billion dollars in local energy infrastructure, while Nvidia is separately putting an additional 1.5 billion dollars into SB Energy itself.

Powering a facility of this magnitude is a monumental challenge in its own right. To meet the enormous electricity demand, SoftBank and SB Energy have committed to building at least 10 gigawatts of entirely new energy generation capacity. OpenAI has also pledged 40 million dollars to support local priorities in the surrounding community, acknowledging the profound impact such a project has on its host region.

The economic benefits for Ohio are expected to be substantial. According to projections, the construction of the data center will create around 35,000 temporary jobs spread over a period of six years. Once operational, the facility is expected to sustain approximately 2,500 long term positions, offering a lasting source of skilled employment in a region undergoing significant transformation.

This Ohio site does not exist in isolation, but forms part of the far larger Stargate initiative. That project represents a 500 billion dollar multiyear commitment involving OpenAI, Nvidia, SoftBank and Oracle, with plans for 10 gigawatts of capacity distributed across multiple locations. Notably, that footprint even extends beyond American borders, with a planned 5 gigawatts of capacity earmarked for the United Arab Emirates.

OpenAI is far from alone in this spending spree, as its rivals match the ambition dollar for dollar. Microsoft, one of the most aggressive investors in the space, has reportedly spent roughly 280 billion dollars on data center expansion since 2022. The company is now believed to be operating approximately 2.2 million AI chips across its global network of facilities, an almost incomprehensible amount of computing hardware.

The collective scale of these bets is staggering. Industry observers note that nine major technology companies are now holding roughly 3 trillion dollars in commitments that do not appear as traditional debt on their balance sheets. This financial engineering underscores both the immense confidence in AI's future and the equally immense risks being taken to secure a leading position in the race.

Deals and rising startups

The frenzy is also fueling a wave of high value acquisitions and startup funding. The payments giant Stripe is reportedly acquiring OpenRouter, a company that was valued at around 1.3 billion dollars back in May, for a sum exceeding 7 billion dollars. Such a dramatic jump in valuation over a matter of months illustrates just how quickly fortunes are being made in the current environment.

Elsewhere, the AI video startup Higgsfield has captured attention by raising 400 million dollars at a valuation of 5.4 billion dollars. The company's growth has been explosive, with its revenue climbing from around 20 million dollars annually to an annualized run rate of 700 million dollars. It now serves more than 30 million users spread across an impressive 238 countries and territories.

Policy tries to keep pace

As the technology races ahead, efforts to govern it are gaining momentum too. OpenAI is funding 14 global policy and research projects, providing selected organizations with a total of 1 million dollars plus additional model credits to study AI's societal impact. Meanwhile, the White House has convened leading labs to discuss a new framework encouraging them to voluntarily share their most advanced models with the government before public release, a sign that regulation is slowly catching up to reality.
